Claims to FameSupported HousingWe've gone from no agency owned or developed housing to providing subsidized living arrangements for over 200 clients in our houses and apartments. We opened the first Division of Behavioral Healthcare and Medicaid funded supervised apartments in the state of Rhode Island, and created a separate non-profit housing development subcorporation - Blackstone Valley Mental Health Realty Corporation. Over the years we have developed relationships with other agencies to provided property management and supportive services that are in the best interest of our clients. An array of residential options ensures that most residents can have choices in their housing arrangements and avoid lengthy and expensive institutional care. Elder ServicesNRICS is the community mental health center/substance abuse provider most identified with efforts to improve access and services for seniors with behavioral health needs. Of particular concern is the relatively high incidence of depression, substance abuse, and "self neglect" among seniors. NRICS provides consultation to the Department of Elderly Affairs and other case management agencies regarding protective services, and has developed a nursing home consultation service. We also developed team building and debriefing services for the Visiting Nurse Service of Greater Rhode Island Hospice Team. Consumer Advocacy & Peer SupportNRICS has a longstanding history of leading the way for client empowerment through advocacy and peer support. We were the first to develop an in-house Office of Consumer Advocacy so clients receiving long-term services could recommend program changes. We designated the first consumer representative to the Rhode Island Council of Community Mental Health Organizations' Board, and created the first affirmative industry, Monday Morning Industries, an affiliate that is run mainly by clients. Also, our Alive Peer Support Center is the only Community Mental Health Center-affiliated peer support services provider in Rhode Island. EmploymentWe have been providing job assessment, job placement and job support services for over 20 years. Our Community Support Programs were the first to initiate a transitional employment service, Project Jobs, for adult clients via a federal grant. Our Child & Family Services was the first community mental health center to develop adolescent employment services as an alternative after-school activity. We now maintain a stand alone Employment Services Team that provides job matching assistance and supports to both employers and clients. |
