History and Overview

Organized 20 years ago as an "affirmative industry/disability business enterprise (DBE)," MMI originally operated snack bars, vending machines, and coffee shops at NRICS and catered events for the non-profit sector.

In response to client requests for more diverse job experience opportunities, MMI developed Project Jobs, providing temporary and part-time jobs and work experiences in community settings. NRICS provides vocational evaluations, job coaching support, and coordination with Office of Rehabilitation Services. MMI provides payroll, workers compensation, and bills and collects from private industry for the services of our MMI workers.

Most recently the organization secured a multi-year State of Rhode Island, Division of Behavioral Health contract to provide consumer-run and directed peer support services.

What The Alive Program Offers

Unlike a “drop-in center,” most Alive events happen in the community (ie; movies, cultural events, psycho-educational seminars, beach trips, shopping). Some events, such as advocacy forums and drawing classes, take place at All Saints Parish, 323 Rathbun Street, in Woonsocket. This is also the location of the Alive office. Monthly Member Meetings allow Alive members to voice suggestions and opinions about the program while enjoying a special meal.

Alive also offers Consumers the opportunity to re-enter the workforce, under the supervision of the Alive Project Director, as Activities Assistants, Peer Advocates, and Van Drivers. Through this unique program, Alive members can socialize with fellow Consumers and form a natural support system within the community. Alive Staff often network with other organizations in order to meet the diverse interests of area Consumers. Hours of operation for Alive were designed to create a system of peer support that is available “off hours” (nights and weekends).
